Diversify: Older Workers Add Value Symposium 2022

OSSCO© organizes and hosts exhibitors, industry knowledge experts and panel discussions targeted to attract older people (50 – 70). The purpose of this learning event is to give older people looking for work knowledge, to connect with businesses, and showcase best age-friendly business practices. The Symposium came out of the New Horizons for Senior’s project Showcasing Best Practices for an Age Friendly Workplace. The goal was to enhance the business community’s awareness and understanding of the contributions of older people in the workplace. At the end of the project, a virtual learning event and a Symposium, showcasing best age-friendly business practices were done.

A “best practices” questionnaire was developed for both employers and job seekers to comment on. The results from the questionnaire were used to develop criteria as to what would be the best practices for an age-friendly workforce. 54 past learners from OSSCO© ’s Job Search Strategies and Employment Networking Group provided feedback as to what the criteria for an age-inclusive Employer should be. This included a multi-generational workforce with 25% of its workforce aged 50+. Gathering and analyzing that feedback created the standards and criteria for the Age-Diverse Best Business Practices Award.

As a result of that work, OSSCO© launched Ontario’s 1st Age-Diverse Best Business Practices Award where employers were recognized at this Symposium. OSSCO© ’s Supporter and Membership Associate focused on attracting speaker sponsors and Symposium sponsors as part of their fundraising objectives. The New Horizons for Seniors’ volunteers reviewed nominees for this award. Three organizations were recognized at the Diversify: Older Workers Add Value Symposium. These businesses were: Bazaar Marketing, Seniors for Seniors and Moveable Inc.
